La cirugía española en el contexto internacional. Análisis bibliométrico a través del Science Citation Index (1990-1994)

Introducción. La utilidad de los estudios bibliométricos radica en ser indicadores de la labor clínica e investigadora de un área de la ciencia. La escasa representación de revistas
de cirugía españolas en las bases de datos internacionales justifica el interés por conocer qué publican los cirujanos y dónde lo hacen.
Material y métodos. Obtención de las publicaciones recogidas en la base de datos Science Citation Index (1990-1994). Se analizan la distribución geográfica e institucional de la producción, las revistas de publicación y el área de publicación.
Resultados. El número de publicaciones quirúrgicas españolas en revistas de difusión internacional experimentó un incremento notable durante el período 1990-1994. La principal institución productora fue el hospital, seguida de los centros mixtos hospital-universidad. Las áreas de cirugía donde se publicaron más documentos fueron cirugía del hígado, páncreas, tórax y cirugía vascular.
Conclusiones. El porcentaje de participación de la cirugía española dentro del contexto internacional de la ciencia es uno de los más bajos de Europa. Sin embargo, la presencia internacional de la investigación quirúrgica ha experimentado un importante incremento durante este período manteniendo su nivel de influencia sobre la comunidad científica

Introduction. The utility of bibliometric studies lies in their role as indicators of the clinical and research activity of a specific scientific area. Given the limited number of journals on Spanish surgery included in international databases, it is of interest to know what surgeons publish and where.
Material and methods. The study was based on the publications included in the Science Citation Index from 1990 to 1994. The geographic and institutional distribution of the contributions, the journals in which they were published and the areas dealt with were analyzed.
Results. The number of Spanish surgical publications in international journals rose notably during the study period. Hospitals were the most productive institutions, followed by university-hospital complexes. The most common subjects were hepatic, pancreatic, thoracic and vascular surgery.
Conclusions. The percentage of the international surgical literature that is contributed by Spanish surgeons is among the lowest in Europe. However, the presence of Spanish surgical research on the international level has grown considerably during the study period, maintaining its degree of influence over the scientific community
