Every moment has an inspiration process

Almost 30 years ago, in 1987, Levi Guerra and Cerqueira Magro founded the ‘Arquivos de Medicina’.1 The journal, aimed to fulfil a gap in the educational needs of Portuguese medical students, was the “work of love, a materialization of a dream, a desire to serve better”. In 2010 an upgrade was made with an editorial and corporate image rebranding, allowing an improvement in terms of quality, modernization and innovation. Arquivos de Medicina was then indexed and summarized by EMBASE / Excerpta Medica, Index RMP, Latindex and SciELO. Finally, the endeavour of an outstanding group of medical students, lead by João Madureira and Diogo Leal, began the renovation to what is now Porto Biomedical Journal (PBJ). Their dream was made possible by António Ferreira and Amélia Ferreira. Together we can do better.

Every persistence must have an impact

Porto Biomedical Journal is the official journal of the University Center of Medicine shaped in August 2015 by the consortium of the São João Hospital Center and the Faculty of Medicine, University of Porto.2 PBJ's headquarters are in a unique hub making truly possible for science to meet knowledge. We are surrounded by some of topmost European scientific organizations such as the Institute of Molecular Pathology and Immunology of the University of Porto (IPATIMUP), the Institute for Molecular and Cell Biology (IBMC), the Institute for Research and Innovation in Health (I3S), the Institute of Biomedical Engineering (INEB), and the Institute of Public Health of the University of Porto (ISPUP). Therefore, it is our ambition to strengthen our connection with the surrounding social and scientific environment looking forward international assertion.

Every progress deserves recognition

The ability of a publication to attract and select the best content is also a function of the quality of its Editorial Board. We are very proud of having an outstanding editorial board, comprising renowned scientist from more than twenty countries from the five continents reflecting the diversity of the research community with respect to geography, and types of institutions represented. Each and every one is kindly acknowledged for their unique support from the very first moment they’ve heard of PBJ. It is our strong belief that such prestige Editorial Board will boost the energy and dynamism to face future challenges that await this publication, ensuring smooth article flow, guaranteeing their quality and scientific relevance.

Every hard work has a single purpose

From an editorial point of view, the overarching goal for PBJ is to produce high quality content, consistent with the editorial charter of the publication. It is paramount that PBJ uphold these standards in the development and selection of content. Secondly, to strength PBJ's reputation in the scientific and scholarly community, and, on the short term, PBJ will be expanded to other databases, such as the renowned PubMed/MEDLine. For this, our compromises are to faithfully execute the editorial charter of PBJ by promoting balanced contents that represent the full spectrum of high quality work ongoing in the field of biomedicine. We guarantee that publications will have appropriate and well-defined procedures for refereeing and review, which will be fair, unbiased, and faithfully executed.

Every question must have an answer

PBJ is a large, international, open-access for readers and authors, scientific journal that considers all manuscripts reporting the results of primary scientific research, top quality reviews, clinical guidelines and clinical case reports. Highlights from current issue include the description of the HVITAL - Hospital surVeIlance, moniToring and Alert.3 HVITAL evaluates every single patient that enters São João Hospital and runs a series of algorithms to produce risk scores and clinical stratification in terms of deterioration risk, being able to predict intensive care admissions and non-intensive care deaths. This data analysis software platform, that allowed São João to become the first non-US institution to ever win the Microsoft Worldwide Innovation Award (Florida, 2014) and the European Big Data & Analytics solution of the year (London, 2014), is being used for the last years assisting medical doctors to decide better and faster.

Every discover is a huge step to mankind

Every researcher wants to make the difference, contribute to the evolution of medicine and become a reference. PBJ wants to add value to your effort, expertise and development process. Submit your paper and spread your recognition to a global audience. Please, allow us to welcome you to the Porto Biomedical Journal!
