Abstract
Objectives

Access to health services is a critical factor in ensuring equitable healthcare delivery. Understanding patient perspectives on barriers and obstacles to healthcare access is essential for improving health outcomes. This study aims to design and test an instrument to assess self-perceived access to health services across different levels of care, encompassing all process dimensions.

Methods

The survey, constructed with an interdisciplinary approach, is administered at the household level. It was validated by experts and approved by a Bioethics Committee. This survey was conducted in a medium-sized city in Argentina.

Results

The validated instrument provides a comprehensive tool to investigate, from the patient's perspective and preferences, the barriers that prevent a health need from becoming a demand and the obstacles to effectively using the needed healthcare service. The implementation of the survey revealed significant insights into these issues.

Conclusions

Our instrument offers valuable insights into the patient-perceived barriers to healthcare access. It is a robust tool for identifying the obstacles that impede the utilization of health goods and services in the different levels of care, thereby improving healthcare delivery systems.

Objetivos

El acceso a los servicios de salud es un factor crítico para garantizar una atención equitativa. Comprender las perspectivas de los pacientes sobre las barreras y los obstáculos en el acceso a la atención sanitaria es esencial para mejorar los resultados de salud. Este estudio tiene como objetivo diseñar y probar un instrumento para evaluar el acceso autopercibido a los servicios de salud en diferentes niveles de atención, abarcando todas las dimensiones del proceso.

Métodos

La encuesta, construida con un enfoque interdisciplinario, se administra a nivel de hogar. Fue validada por expertos y aprobada por un Comité de Bioética. Esta encuesta se llevó a cabo en una ciudad mediana de Argentina.

Resultados

El instrumento validado proporciona una herramienta integral para investigar, desde la perspectiva y las preferencias del paciente, las barreras que impiden que una necesidad de salud se convierta en demanda, y los obstáculos para utilizar eficazmente el servicio de salud requerido. La implementación de la encuesta reveló importantes hallazgos sobre estas cuestiones.

Conclusiones

Nuestro instrumento ofrece valiosas perspectivas sobre las barreras percibidas por los pacientes para acceder a los servicios de salud. Es una herramienta sólida para identificar los obstáculos que dificultan la utilización de bienes y servicios de salud en los distintos niveles de atención, mejorando así los sistemas de prestación de servicios de salud.
