Abstract

The Nobel Prize is an international recognition awarded to individuals who have made significant contributions to humanity. The areas that are recognized are physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature, and peace. With more than 100 years of existence, only 10 surgeons have been recipients of this recognition. Their contributions range from cardiac catheterization, the discovery of insulin to the beginning of the modern era of organ transplantation. These surgeons through their research have greatly contributed to modern medicine, saving, and improving quality of life of millions of human beings. This article will describe a brief history of the surgeons and their contribution to medical advances that allowed them to be recognized with the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine.

El premio Nobel es un reconocimiento internacional otorgado a las personas que han realizado contribuciones significativas a la humanidad. Las áreas reconocidas son la física, química, fisiología o medicina, literatura y paz. Con más de 100 años de existencia, solamente 10 cirujanos han sido acreedores de dicho reconocimiento. Aportaciones que incluyen desde el cateterismo cardíaco, el descubrimiento de la insulina, hasta el inicio de la era moderna del trasplante de órganos. Cirujanos que con sus investigaciones han contribuido de gran manera a la medicina moderna, salvando y mejorando la calidad de vida de millones de seres humanos. En el presente artículo se describirá una breve historia de los cirujanos y sus aportaciones a los avances de la medicina que les permitió ser reconocidos con el Premio Nobel en fisiología o medicina.
