Resumen
Aim

To describe the spectrum of non-gynecological applications of transvaginal ultrasonography (TV-US), comparing its diagnostic usefulness with that of other imaging techniques.

Materials and Methods

Fifty patients with peritoneal and/or pelvic pathology were evaluated by means of TV-US: cancer of rectum (n = 11) or sigmoid colon (n = 10); sigmoid diverticulitis (n = 11); pelvic appendicitis (n = 3); enteric cysts (n = 2); peritoneal implants (n = 5); Crohn’s disease (n = 3); ureteral lithiasis (n = 3) and bladder neoplasia (n = 2). These findings are compared with those obtained by means of abdominal ultrasonography.

Results

TV-US is useful in: a) evaluating rectal stenoses and sigmoid neoplasias which are inaccessible to transrectal probe, thus rendering presurgical staging similar to that afforded by CT; b) differentiating between sigmoid stenoses whose origins are either neoplasic or inflammatory (diverticulitis), all of which could not be clarified using ultrasonography ( transabdominal and/or transrectal) and/or CT; c) evaluating rectal and/or perianal complications of Crohn’s disease; d) diagnosing pelvic appendicitis and/or diverticulitis, in association with abdominal ultrasound; e) characterizing malignant peritoneal implants; f) detecting lithiasis and/or tumors in the bladder and distal ureter

Conclusion

TV-US is a technique which could be used in complement to transabdominal or transrectal ultrasound in the evaluation of non-gynecological pathology, especially of the lower intestinal tract, distal ureter, bladder and peritoneal cavity. Its use is recommended in the case of inconclusive diagnoses, as well as for examining the pelvic and lower part of the peritoneum.
