It is also becoming more important to the general public who are increasingly concerned not only with living longer, but also enjoying improved physical condition and an optimum quality of life. The European Society of Musculoskeletal Radiology (ESR) is the third largest member society of the European Society of Radiology,<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0005"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">1</span></a> with a large number of Spanish radiologists (399 at the end of 2022, figure that looks likely to increase this year).</p><p id="par0010" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">This increased number of specialists in the musculoskeletal area reflects the needs of today’s society. In a study by the English National Health Service, around 20% of adult patients have consulted their general practitioner for musculoskeletal issues.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0010"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">2</span></a> Of the musculoskeletal disorders recorded globally in 2017, the highest percentage of prevalent cases involved low back pain (36.8%), followed by other musculoskeletal disorders (systemic lupus erythematosus, seronegative spondyloarthropathy, inflammatory arthritis, etc.) (21.5%), osteoarthritis (19.3%), neck pain (18.4%), gout (2.6%) and rheumatoid arthritis (1.3%). This overload of cases is higher in developed countries.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0015"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">3</span></a></p><p id="par0015" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">In the United States, the number of MRIs on joints increased by 53% between 2003 and 2015 and the number of ultrasounds on joints by 347%,<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0020"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">4</span></a> although the latter is partly due to the use of ultrasounds by clinicians other than radiologists. Another study from the United States demonstrated that musculoskeletal MRI reports are valued by clinicians who consulted them as their only source of diagnostic information in 57.3% of cases and in combination with images in 42%. Specialists only consulted images in 0.7% of cases.<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0025"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">5</span></a></p><p id="par0020" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">This data highlights the importance of the musculoskeletal radiology specialty, a good command of the techniques used in the field, and precise reports.</p><p id="par0025" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Currently, the Spanish Society of Musculoskeletal Radiology (SERME)<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0030"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">6</span></a> has more than 700 members. This is reflected in the increased number of activities related to this specialty and the quantity of articles published in national and international journals.</p><p id="par0030" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">In this special supplement for RADIOLOGÍA, we gather together the articles we have received on the topic over the past year. They reflect the varied concerns of Spanish musculoskeletal radiologists and address both degenerative and mechanical diseases of the spine and extremities, as well as more specific tumoral and infectious conditions.</p><p id="par0035" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">We hope this compilation will encourage others to publish articles in our society’s journal. Since 2015, <span class="elsevierStyleSmallCaps">Radiología</span> has been indexed in Clarivate Analytics’<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0040"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">8</span></a> Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI)<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#bib0035"><span class="elsevierStyleSup">7</span></a> and it will receive its first impact factor score next July.
