Studying sound quality in the sung voice is a difficult task. Published scientific work is scarce and has been carried out on a single subject or a small number of subjects. As far as we know, no standard parameters for the quality of the sung voice have been established.

Like the spoken voice, it is produced physiologically by the interaction between the breath or energy source, the larynx as a vibrator and finally the vocal tract acting as an articulator and resonator. The ability of the vocal tract to transfer sound depends largely on the frequency of the sound being transferred. This ability culminates at certain frequencies called formant frequencies.1

Through adaptations in the vocal tract, the sound acquires its characteristic spectral shape, its timbral identity, so that some harmonics are enhanced and others are muffled. This explains why the volunteers we discarded had difficulties only with this second phrase.

The score was given to the volunteers one week in advance, indicating the phrases to be studied.

The phrases chosen correspond to 2 soprano roles, both belonging to the opera Le nozze di Figaro by W.A. Mozart and clearly differentiated psychologically by the composer. The frequency range of the 2 arias is very similar, but their interpretation requires different intentions, degrees of vocal maturity and technical mastery. The first phrase, belonging to the character of Susanna, is simple and is usually performed by young and less experienced singers. The second phrase, from the character of La Contessa, demands greater vocal maturity and technical proficiency, and is usually entrusted to experienced singers.

The volunteers were first asked to sing each phrase spontaneously without instrumental accompaniment, and the second time, after an intervention. Opera singers are considered to be "vocal athletes" because of the high demands they place on their voice, because they possess greater respiratory and laryngeal control, and also because they exercise greater control over the articulatory subsystems during singing. Compared to non-singers, they have greater phonatory agility, endurance and strength, and perform complex laryngeal manoeuvres.13

We can affirm that the A4 in phrase 1 (Susanna's aria), does not present difficulties that require special technical skills. However, in the one chosen as phrase 2 (La Contessa's aria), its execution is very demanding from a technical and expressive point of view, requiring greater respiratory control, as well as intensity in the glottal source and articulatory adjustments. In this second phrase, which is much larger and more complex than Susanna's aria, the singer must maintain not only the intonation but also the intensity of the A4 for a prolonged period of time. The expressive function of this tone requires an energetic utterance on the word "cangiar" (change), in the text "cangiar l'ingrato cor" (change the ungrateful heart) which is repeated and must maintain an almost desperate tension until the end of the aria. Mozart composed the orchestral accompaniment to reinforce the desired effect and to stimulate the energy that the singer needs to convey the emotional state to be interpreted.

Accuracy of intonation has been accepted as an important factor associated with perceived singing talent and can be measured objectively by observing variations in F014. The results obtained show that it remains above 880 Hz in both phrases. Although we have established that pitch improved the smaller the deviation from 880 Hz, the variation observed could be due to the tendency generated by projection and expressive intention.

What is perceived as pitch in the melody depends on musical and interpretative contexts, and there seems to be a greater tolerance in the audience if the frequency is raised than if the sound remains flat. The singer tends to raise the energy with which they generate the sound in order to maintain the pitch of the F0 when the note is prolonged,14 which coincides with our results.

Acoustic characteristics such as vibrato, jitter, shimmer, timbre stability and variability, spectrum envelope, as well as pitch onset and pitch end characteristics serve to identify a sound as a vocal sound and are different from the pitch characteristics of other instruments. It consists of a periodic oscillation of pitch in which the Extent presents an average rate of about 1/2 tone for the best singers (for stringed instruments, about 1/4 tone), at an average rate of about 6 or 7 cycles per second. Good vibrato in music is a periodic pulsation, generally affecting pitch, intensity and timbre, which produces a pleasing sense of flexibility, sweetness and richness of tone.16 Expressions such as: warm, vibrating, resonant, dull, lifeless, hollow, etc., often rest on whether vibrato is present or absent.4

The difference in vibrato in opera and jazz singers is related to the singer's formant, vibrato clearly differentiates these two styles showing that regularity (Jitter and Shimmer) is better in opera singers, with a greater amplitude, and no difference in frequency.17

Wooding and Nix conducted survey work, the specific aim of which was to determine when a tone is perceived as having no vibrato by groups of singers, singing teachers, choral conductors and speech pathologists. Secondly, both vibrato extension and mean F0 often varied with pitch level. In addition, vibrato regularity tended to be greater in F4 than in A4. These findings may reflect differences in the intonation control system in these pitches.19

Vibrato rate is often considered constant, and although some singers may deliberately vary it, others do not. Vibrato rate and vibrato extent vary considerably according to genre, style, singer and emotional environment of the piece. Researchers in vocal pedagogy and the singing community in general agree that opera singers naturally develop vibrato during the training period. Levels of perception of vibrato as "good" or "bad", "pleasant" or "unpleasant" to the ear are highly subjective and seem to be based on individual listener preferences. Regardless of the vocal classification, it seems that vibrato around 6 Hz is considered the most appropriate.21

A Vibrato rate lower than 4 Hz is considered wobbly and is disliked by singing pedagogues. We know that the aesthetics of vibrato vary from one culture to another. In the vibrato used by western opera singers, we must cite García, who introduces the technical idea of "voice coverage", as a means to produce greater acoustic potential and vibrato with higher frequency modulations.24,25

We will highlight the SPR as a quality parameter even in sopranos, given the particularities that the singer's formant presents in this type of voice. In opera singers, an increase in energy is associated with an increase in energy between 2 and 4 kHz, which is fundamental for projection and directly related to good vocal quality.26

The SPR compares the highest amplitude peak in the range between 2 and 4 kHz and the highest partial amplitude between 0 and 2 kHz. This energy depends on the volume as well as the technique used.

The values obtained for SPR remain stable in phrase 1 and 2 before and after the intervention. According to Cesari et al. the analysis of SPR values is remarkably associated with the quality of the sung voice, years of training and perceptual assessment, however, in view of our results we must consider that Omori et al. have already established that the SPR of the sung /a/ is significantly lower in sopranos than in other voice types. Omori et al. also state that the analysis of the SPR can help in the pedagogy of singing to refine the resonance of the vocal tract.26,27

Regarding the perception of sound quality and comfort in delivery, our results in the VAS questionnaires show that there is improvement after the intervention, especially when the sung phrase is more technically and expressively demanding. In fact, the PRAAT programme, although it provides us with multiple possibilities in the analysis of the sung voice, is designed especially for the spoken voice. One reason for the absence of formal criteria is that there are many differences in the technical assessment of the singing voice and many of them do not apply in the same direction across styles and repertoires.18 However, it is significant to note that, after the proposed intervention, the values tend to improve in a higher percentage of subjects in the second phrase. This is significant because it is a much more complex and larger phrase, more demanding to perform and requiring greater technical mastery.

Our study has some limitations. Opera singing requires memorisation and mechanisation of reflexes, which requires training applied to each specific score. The volunteers who participated in the study have followed different technical guidelines in their training.
