Fundamento

Background

The effect of moderate physical exercise (PE) on blood pressure (BP) in normotensive subjects is not clear. It’s well known that the heart rate (HR) decreases with exercise, but the duration of the effect after discontinuing physical activity is not known. The aim of this study was to ascertain, in normotensive men, the changes of BP and HR induced by the practice and discontinuation of moderate PE

Subjects and methods

It is an analytic observational and longitudinal study. 27 young healthy normotensive men with a average age of 24.8 years (SD = 3.3), were evaluated in 5 different phases: first, at the end of a week without PE; second, after 8 weeks of regular PE; third, after 3 weeks without PE, fourth, after 5 weeks of a new period of PE, and fifth, after 4 days of discontinuing PE. The PE was mainly aerobic (72.2%), at an average intensity of 8.44 kcal/min and a weekly expenditure of 1519.2 kcal. Each PE session lasted 45 minutes and was done 4 times a week

Results

In the second phase, in which the weight increased slightly (2.32%; p < 0.001), the BP was significantly lower (7.11 mmHg; p < 0.01). In the fourth phase, without ponderal changes, the systolic, diastolic and mean BP decreased, (2.30; 3.86; 3.33) although the changes were only significant (p < 0.05) for the diastolic and mean BP. The diastolic BP increased significantly at the fifth phase (3.04 mmHg, p < 0.05). The HR decreased in both phases with active PE (11.98% p < 0.01, in the second phase, and 12.7%, p < 0.001, in the fourth one). In the third phase, the mean values returned to baseline (18.54% p < 0.001); this did not occur in the fifth phase

Conclusions

Moderate PE induced a decrease in BP and HR in young normotensive men. These effects last more than 4 days and less than 3 weeks
