Abstract

Shewanella putrefaciens, is a pathogen, bacterium, gram-negative, non-fermenting bacillus and optional anaerobic: positive oxidase. Of rare and uncommon presence in humans, it naturally inhabits marine environments and some species of freshwater fish. It presents an unclear pathophysiological mechanism, which produces a wide spectrum of serious opportunistic infections in the skin, soft tissues and target organs with a characteristic and variable evolution. Its transmission has been related through contact with the marine environment and tropical habitats. Currently, its treatment is not protocolized, it is based on antimicrobial susceptibility. Finally, this article describes the evolution and clinical results of a patient who suffers and dies from septic shock of this microorganism.
