Abstract

Sepsis is a public health problem worldwide, it generates a high number of annual consultations and hospitalizations. Despite advances in modern medicine, it remains the leading cause of death in the critical patient. Several decades ago the development of biomarkers has been promoted in order to achieve an early diagnosis and timely and adequate follow-up of the bacterial infection. Procalcitonin (PCT) in 2008 was proposed as a diagnostic marker to differentiate bacterial infection from other inflammatory conditions, subsequently it has been used as a guide for antimicrobial therapy in different scenarios and in recent years it has been evaluated as a prognostic marker. This article is a narrative review of procalcitonin as a diagnostic tool, a guide to antimicrobial therapy and a prognostic marker in critical patients.
