Resumen

Spanish is the second most spoken Western language and has become the fastest growing European language in the short term. However, as a specialized language in the field of science and technology, Spanish, like other languages, occupies a residual position in comparison to the lingua franca: English. The need to bring greater international visibility to our scientific community led to a strategy of publishing scientific papers in English and, although this has proved to be very successful (Spain occupies the tenth position worldwide in scientific production), it is obvious that the Spanish language has been abandoned in the process.

Spanish will consolidate its use in science and technology only if the social impact of its activity increases. The Science, Technology and Innovation Act (2011) and the Spanish Strategy for Science and Technology and Innovation (2013) both set as one of their objectives the promotion of science outreach, and as such act as tools for the promotion of Spanish. The fresh opportunities provided by “Open science” and the social networks should also serve to increase the impact of scientific and technical documents in Spanish.
