The import of women's relegation to the domestic realm to the functioning of a more liberal society and argued for a woman's worth to be measured by her ability to nurture.2

Freud had posited as the roots of human motivation innate sexual and aggressive drives and an even deeper, but also biological, “Nirvana principle” (a drive toward minimal excitation).3 Holland explained that Lacan ego is the carrier of neurosis and self-deception. Therapy should aim, not to strengthen the ego (as in American ego-psychology) but to recognize the split, de-centered self, which is “the truth of the subject”. This study reveals that sexuality appeared from the biological human and psychology human. Each of the perspectives that conducted psychology sexuality most influenced by ego and social interaction the human.

Sex was simply a biological drive or in theological doctrine, a licentious lust stimulated by the devil.4 That which crossed the boundaries of the current orthodoxy, be it manifestations of homosexual desire in a heterosexually orientated culture, women manifesting desire for men outside the bonds of wedlock, sex during menstruation, during old age, or within families, would undoubtedly have been contained and controlled, but certainly not ‘cured’. “Emma made her toilet with the fastidious care an actress at her debut. She arranged her hair according to the directions of the hairdresser, and put on the barege costume spread on the bed”.

Pages 63 Chapter IX part I

“Emma was growing difficult and capricious. She ordered dishes for herself, then she did not touch them; one day she drank only pure milk, and the next cups of tea by the dozen. Often she persisted in not going out, then, stifling, threw open the windows and put on thin gowns. After she had scolded her servant, severely she gave her presents or sent her out to see the neighbors, just as she sometimes threw to beggars all the silver in her purse, although she was by no means tender-hearted or easily accessible to the feelings of others, like most country-bred people, who always retain in their souls something of the horny hardness of the paternal hands”.

Pages 98 chapter IV part II

“Emma did not ask herself whether she loved. Love, she thought, must come suddenly, with great outbursts and lightnings-like a hurricane from the skies, falling upon life, revolutionizing it, rooting up the will like a leaf, and sweeping the whole heart into the abyss. She did know that on the roofs of houses the floods make lakes when the pipes are choked, and she would thus have remained in her security when she suddenly discovered a rent in its wall”.

Pages 123 chapter VII part II

“A woman who had made such sacrifices could well allow herself certain whims. She bought a gothic prie-Dieu, and in a month spent fourteen francs on lemons for bleaching her nails; she sent Rouen for a blue cashmere grown; she chose one of Lheureux's finest scarves, and wore it tied round her waist over her dressing-gown; and, with closed blinds and a book in her hand, she lay on a couch in this garb”.

“She often changed the style of her coiffure; she arranged her hair a la Chinoise, then in flowing curls, in plaited coils; she parted it on one side and rolled it under like a man's”.

Pages 172 Chapter X Part II

“She did know whether she regretted having yielded to him, or whether she did not wish, on the contrary, to enjoy him the more. Feeling herself weak was turning to rancor, tempered by their voluptuous pleasures. It was not affection; it was like a continual seduction. He subjugated her; she almost feared him”.

Pages 190 Chapter XII Part II

“Their love was renewed. Often, even in the middle of the day, Emma Suddenly wrote to him, then from the window made a sign to Justin, who, taking his apron off, quickly ran to La Huchete with the note. Radolphe would come; she had sent him to tell that she was bored, that her husband was odious, her life frightful”.

Pages 276 Chapter V Part III

“They said “our room”, “our carpet,” she even said “our slippers,” alluding to a gift of Leon's to gratify on her whims. They were of pink satin, bordered with swansdown. When she sat on his knee, her shortened leg swung in the air, and the dainty shoe, which had no back to it, was held to her barefoot only be the toes.

Pages 296 Chapter VI Part III

“She did not fail, in truth, to lavish all sorts of attentions upon him, from the delicacies of food to the coquetries of dress and languishing looks. She brought roses in her breast from Yonville, which she threw into his face; was anxious about his health, gave him advice as to his conduct; and, in order the more surely to keep her part, she tied a medal of the virgin round his neck. She inquired like a virtuous mother about his companions. She said to him:” don’t see them; don’t go there; think only of ourselves; love me!”.
