Introducing article numbering to Atención Primaria Práctica

Atención Primaria Práctica es una revista internacional en lengua castellana e inglesa que publica artículos de interés para los profesionales asistenciales que desean conocer los aspectos prácticos de la disciplina. Se incluye en el grupo de revistas de "case reports" pero no se limita a publicar casos clínicos sino que aborda también todos aquellos aspectos que interesan a la atención primaria práctica como son los proyectos de mejora de la calidad clínica, de seguridad del paciente, de atención centrada en la persona, de programas comunitarios, de conflictos éticos o de innovaciones organizativas que mejoran la atención primaria. Los estudios descriptivos de casos y de experiencias únicas se sitúan en la base de la pirámide de la evidencia científica y por este motivo no suelen ser aceptados en las revistas que publican investigación biomédica, sin embargo estos trabajos aportan un conocimiento que puede ser muy útil para el clínico, para el estudiante y para el investigador. Son interesantes para identificar enfermedades raras o nuevas, para evaluar los efectos de la terapéutica, sus efectos adversos o el coste de las intervenciones y contribuyen al aprendizaje basado en problemas y a no repetir errores. Permiten inducir la creación de guías o vías de práctica clínica o sugerir futuros proyectos de investigación. Son una parte importante del progreso de la medicina. Atención Primaria Práctica is a Spanish and English language international journal that publishes articles of interest for health professionals that wish to become familiar with the practical aspects of the discipline. Although it is included in the group of "case report" journals, it is not limited to publishing clinical cases, as it also approaches all those aspects that are of interest in Primary Care practice, such as projects on the improvement of clinical quality, patient safety, patient-centred care, community programs, ethical conflicts, or organisational innovations that improve Primary Care. Descriptive studies of cases and unique experiences are situated at the bottom of the scientific evidence pyramid, and for this reason they are not usually accepted in journals that publish biomedical research; however, these works provide knowledge that can be very useful for the clinician, the student, and the researcher. They are of interest for identifying rare or new diseases, to evaluate the effects of therapeutics, their adverse effects, or the cost of interventions, as well as contributing to problem-based learning and non-repetition of errors. They serve to encourage the creation of guidelines or clinical practice pathways or to suggest future research projects. They are an important part of medical progress.

Within the publishing industry, article numbering has emerged as an easy and efficient way to cite journal articles. Article numbering has already been successfully rolled out to Elsevier's multidisciplinary open access journal Heliyon, as well as more than 200 other journals, and has been well received by the academic community. Based on that positive feedback, we are now pleased to introduce article numbering to Atención Primaria práctica from this issue.

What is article numbering?

A unique article number is an abbreviated form of an article's DOI - digital object identifier. Citing an article with an article number is very simple: the article number is used instead of the page range in the citation.

While journal volumes and issue numbers will remain in place, article numbering will now play the key role in identifying specific articles. The introduction of article numbers brings several benefits for the journal and its readers and authors.

More flexible reading: Article content can be optimized based on the device used to access it, supporting reading on-the-move, without needing to know how many traditional print pages the article takes up.

Increased options for grouping related content: In online collections and Special Issues, articles can now be placed in any order, helping readers to identify papers relevant to their research interests faster.

Faster publication: With article numbers, the version of record of the article is online and citable as soon as the proof corrections have been incorporated, ensuring readers have access to the latest research faster.
