Special issue information:
The anatomical and pathological intersections between thoracic and general surgery often present unique diagnostic and therapeutic challenges that require collaborative expertise. This Special Issue is dedicated to exploring these overlapping territories through a curated selection of topics co-authored by thoracic and general surgeons. It aims to foster dialogue, consolidate knowledge, and promote a multidisciplinary approach to complex conditions that lie at the surgical interface.
Key themes include:
- Intrathoracic goiters and ectopic parathyroid glands requiring thoracic access
- Thyroid malignancies infiltrating the trachea, necessitating airway resection or reconstruction
- Thoracoabdominal hernias involving shared management of diaphragmatic and mediastinal structures
- Tracheoesophageal fistulas, demanding combined airway and digestive tract expertise
- Synchronous resections for locally advanced thoracic and digestive malignancies
- Management of pulmonary metastases of digestive origin
The issue will emphasize the value of joint decision-making, technical collaboration, and tailored perioperative care. By addressing these gray zones, the Special Issue seeks to define standards, encourage shared protocols, and ultimately improve outcomes for patients whose conditions defy traditional specialty boundaries.

The Cirugía Española’s submission system is open for submissions to our special issue titled “Bridging Boundaries: A Special Issue on the Surgical Interface between Thoracic and General Surgery”. When submitting your manuscript, please select the article type 'VSI: Thoracic Surgery' from the drop-down list.
The deadline to submit the manuscript will be 31st December 2025.
All submissions deemed suitable to be sent for peer review will be reviewed by at least two independent reviewers. Once your manuscript is accepted, it will go into production and will be simultaneously published in the current regular issue and pulled into the online Special Issue.
Articles from this Special Issue will appear in different regular issues of the journal, though they will be clearly marked and branded as Special Issue articles.
