Dear Editor,

The article “Evaluación de la obstrucción nasal mediante rinomanometría y escalas subjetivas y medición del éxito terapéutico médico y quirúrgico (Assessment of nasal obstruction with rhinomanometry and subjective scales and outcomes of surgical and medical treatment)” was recently published in the journal Acta Otorrinolaringológica Española (number 3, volume 68, pages 145–150), signed by Lara-Sánchez et al.1 In this article, the authors used the Nasal Obstruction Symptom Evaluation (NOSE) scale, created by Stewart et al.2 for the subjective evaluation of nasal obstruction symptoms, in a Spanish language version that was presented at the 65th National Conference of SEORL (Spanish Society of Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery) in 2014.1 It is not the objective of this letter to dispute the quality of this paper, but the article by Lara-Sánchez et al. includes the aforementioned Spanish language version of the scale, in table form. We consider that this might lead the reader to believe this to be the only NOSE scale available in our country, and therefore we feel it appropriate to clarify that an adapted and validated Spanish version of the NOSE scale was published in 2015, with the authorisation of Stewart.3

We trust that this clarification will serve to prevent any confusion or difficulties arising from the use of unpublished versions of the NOSE scale, particularly in national and international research projects. Furthermore, we would like to take this opportunity to promote papers on the cross-cultural adaptation and validation of specific instruments to assess patients’ perceived quality of life (Patient Rated Outcome Measures [PROMs]) in our speciality.4 These instruments are very practical for clinical audits and research, hence their increasingly widespread use in countries with health systems similar to our own.5
