Abstract

This article highlights the role of radiologist Eduardo Amorós Martí (1888–1936) in the use of radioactivity for cancer treatment in Spain during the first third of the 20th century. Following the discovery of radium by the Curies in 1898, Amorós became interested in radiology and established his practice in Alicante. He acquired X-ray and radium equipment, contributing to the development of radiation therapy. He directed the Cancer Pavilion at the Provincial Hospital of Alicante, where he promoted the application of radiation in cancer treatment. Like other historical figures associated with radioactivity, his prolonged exposure deteriorated his health, leading to his premature death in 1936.

Resumen

El artículo destaca el papel del radiólogo Eduardo Amorós Martí (1888–1936) en el uso de la radioactividad para el tratamiento del cáncer en España en el primer tercio del siglo XX. Tras el descubrimiento del radio por los Curie en 1898, Amorós se interesó por la radiología y la radioterapia, estableciendo su práctica en Alicante. Adquirió equipos de rayos X y radio, contribuyendo al desarrollo de la radioterapia. Dirigió el Pabellón del Cáncer en el Hospital Provincial de Alicante, donde promovió desarrolló la aplicación de la radiación en el tratamiento contra el cáncer. Al igual que otras figuras históricas relacionadas con la radioactividad, su exposición prolongada a deterioró su salud, llevándolo a una muerte prematura en 1936.
