Summary
Objectives

To determine whether the cause of previous cesarean section influences the type of subsequent delivery and whether the vaginal route produces a greater number of fetal and/or maternal complications

Material And Methods

We performed a retrospective study of 143 patients with previous cesarean sections and without vaginal deliveries who subsequently gave birth in our service over a 5-year period

Results

Statistically significant differences were found when the type of delivery was compared with the cause of previous cesarean sections: when these were performed for advanced maternal age, fetopelvic incompatibility, fetal distress and breech presentation, the percentages of repeat cesarian section were 100%, 82.1%, 41.4% and 27.8% respectively

Conclusions

The cause of previous cesarean influences the probability of subsequent vaginal delivery. Vaginal delivery does not produce a greater number of maternal and/or fetal complications
