In the last few years, a new somatometric method has been developed for measuring heel-knee distance using an apparatus called a knemometer. Because of its high degree of precision, day-to-day variations can be charted. This not only enables growth-rate to be studied using measurements taken at short intervals but also allows the early identification of growth disorders not easily detected with conventional weight or height measurements. This article reviews the applications of the knemometer in the study of child and neonatal growth.
