Introduction

The aim of this study was to analyze bacterial clearance in rats after cervical spleen transplantation using our experimental model.

Material and method

One hundred isogenic Lewis rats were randomly distributed into four groups: control group with laparotomy and spleen preservation, splenectomy group, spleen autotransplantation group, and heterotopic spleen transplant group. Bacterial clearance was assessed by determination of the number of colonies per ml of blood after pneumococcus infection (1 × 107).

Results

The spleen transplantation group presented a higher protective effect against bacteremia than the autotransplant and splenectomy groups, although this effect was lower than in controls. The differences were statistically significant (p < 0.05).

Conclusions

Our experimental model of cervical spleen transplantation in rats maintains bacterial clearance at values that are close to normal levels and are higher than those obtained with spleen autotransplantation.
