Case

A 41-year-old patient, who was treated surgically as a child for a hydatid cyst of the liver, was admitted to the Psychiatric Department at our hospital after a psychiatric episode. Our Surgery Department was called in as the patient complained of abdominal pain and a mass was palpated in the hypogastrium (the remainder of the examination showed no alterations). Abdominal CT scan detected a voluminous intra-abdominal hydatid cyst located in the subumbilical region that was compressing and displacing the bladder, measuring 14×10×16cm, with multiple daughter cysts (Figs. 1 and 2).

Midline laparotomy revealed an intraperitoneal hydatid cyst that did not infiltrate adjacent structures. Total cystopericystectomy was performed (Fig. 3). The patient was discharged on the third day post-op.
