Objective

To assess immediate postoperative outcomes of mitral valve reconstruction with MitroFix device (Biointegral Surgical, Mississauga, ON, Canada) in patients with extensive prolapse of the mural leaflet.

Methods

Seventy-one patients undergoing mitral valve reconstruction for extensive prolapse of the mural leaflet between March 2007 and February 2010, were assessed before surgery with transthoracic (TTE) and transesophageal echocardiography (TEE). They were re-assessed intraoperatively in operating room with 2D and 3D TEE.

Results

None of the patients showed more than trivial regurgitation in the early postoperative period.

Conclusion

Repair techniques of the mural leaflet of the mitral valve may be challenging in cases of extensive prolapse, damage caused by infective endocarditis and restrictive motion as seen in ischaemic cardiomyopathy. The MitroFix concept comprises of a D-shaped annuloplasty ring with a curved surface made of medical-grade polymer covered with porcine pericardium.

The device mimics the mural leaflet in the closed position.
