We would like to express our gratitude to the authors of the aforementioned letter to the editor, for their interest in our work, for the opportunity to reply that the journal has afforded us.
In our work "Pre-exposureprophylaxis program of the Community of Madrid: 2 years of experience"1 we analysed the sociodemographic, clinical and behavioural characteristics of the users who were included in the program, examining the variables collected during the initial visits.
We agree on the importance of understanding the reasons for discontinuing HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis, as well as data related to its effectiveness and safety. All the variables studied in the follow-up of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis users (HIV seroconversion, onset of adverse effects, decreased risk perception, changes in sexual or behavioural practices, lack of adherence to the oral regimen, etc., among others) are ongoing lines of research on which we continue to work. We trust that the analysis of this data, both in our cohort and in others across the country, will help design strategies to identify the profiles at greatest risk of contracting the infection, as well as facilitate proper adherence and retention in the PrEP program, with the goal of preventing further HIV transmission.
Source of fundingWe have received no funding to conduct this study. It was carried out during routine care activities.
