Life quality evaluation in patients with bladder cancer: A systematic review

Abstract

Objective

To identify scale validation studies for life quality evaluation in patients with bladder cancer.

Methods

Bibliographic search was performed on MEDLINE® via ovid, EMBASE, CENTRAL and LILACS. Subsequently, each of the articles was evaluated, identifying eligibility criteria. This information was confirmed and verified by the researchers, and in cases of missing information, the authors were contacted to complete the data. Due to the nature of the study, no statistical analysis was performed.

Results

From 1760 articles found, only 5 were included in the qualitative analysis. Five validated questionnaires for quality of life in patients with bladder cancer (BCI, EORTC QLQ-NMIBC24, FACT-VCI, BUSS, FACT-BL). The BCI; most frequently used instrument in bladder cancer studies published to date. The FACT-VCI, instrument of application limited to unique therapeutic options within the spectrum of the disease. The EORTC QLQ-NMIBC24, widely acceptable questionnaire in the European community due to its psychometric characteristics. The BUSS evaluates the patient regardless the stage of the disease. The FACT-BL evaluates life quality in patients with non-muscle invasive bladder cancer.

Conclusion

The use of validated instruments such as: BCI, EORTC QLQ-NMIBC24, FACT-VI, BUSS and FACT-BL which allow evaluating the impact of disease and the established therapies, is recommended.

Objetivo

Identificar estudios de validación de escala para la evaluación de la calidad de vida en los pacientes con cáncer de vejiga.

Métodos

Se realizó búsqueda bibliográfica en MEDLINE^® vía Ovid, EMBASE, CENTRAL y LILACS. Posteriormente, se evaluó cada uno de los artículos identificando criterios de elegibilidad; esta información fue confirmada y verificada por los investigadores, en casos de información faltante se contactó a los autores para completar los datos. No se realizó análisis estadístico debido a la naturaleza del estudio.

Resultados

Se encontraron 1.760 artículos, de los cuales solo se incluyeron 5 artículos en el análisis cualitativo. Cinco cuestionarios validados para calidad de vida en pacientes con cáncer de vejiga (BCI, EORTC QLQ-NMIBC24, FACT-VCI, BUSS, FACT-BL). El BCI, instrumento usado con mayor frecuencia en los estudios publicados a la fecha relacionados con cáncer de vejiga. El FACT-VCI, instrumento de aplicación limitada a opciones terapéuticas únicas dentro del espectro de la enfermedad. El EORTC QLQ-NMIBC24, cuenta con características psicométricas que lo hace un cuestionario de amplia aceptación en la comunidad europea. El BUSS permite evaluar al paciente en cualquiera de los estadios de la enfermedad. El FACT-BL evalúa la calidad de vida en los pacientes con cáncer de vejiga no músculo invasivo.

Conclusión

Se recomienda el uso de instrumentos validados como: BCI, EORTC QLQ-NMIBC24, FACT-VI, BUSS y FACT-BL, los cuales permiten evaluar el impacto de la enfermedad y terapias instauradas.
