Abstract

Hypertension is a chronic disease. The high incidence of hypertension currently requires commitment to achieving sustainable management of hypertension. One way to achieve it is by providing adequate support for patient self-care management. Success in self-care management is influenced by several factors, such as age, sex, education, and family support. Lack of family support as identified in previous studies was the concern that motivated the researchers in the present study to investigate the aspect of family support further. Family influences patients’ decision-making, and has an important role to support the patient. This study aimed to identify family's level of knowledge, attitude, and behavior in supporting hypertensive patients’ self-care management. The respondents were 90 family members of hypertensive patients of three community health care centers in Denpasar. The sample was picked using a consecutive sampling technique. Data were collected using a questionnaire and observation form. The findings of this study show that 68.9% of the respondents had good knowledge, 46.7% had a moderate attitude, and 62.2% showed a behavior that supports patient self-care management.
