Microbial adhesion and colonization may occur, leading to the development of cannula-related infections (Hahne et al., 2015; Kuehn et al., 2013). Moreover, bacteria can easily enter the blood circulation through the cannula or open skin, leading to tissue and organ susceptibility to infection.
