Observations and hypotheses in human alcoholic chronic pancreatitis

Chronic pancreatitis has been defined as irregular sclerosis of the pancreatic gland with destruction and loss of exocrine parenchyma (which can be focal, segmental, or diffuse), dilation of the ductal system associated with strictures or stones, or inflammatory cell infiltration with islets appear to be spared somewhat compared with acini [17]. Chronic pancreatitis is a syndrome of progressive inflammatory destruction and fibrosis in which all histologic features may be seen in all etiologies

Animal models for alcoholic chronic pancreatitis

The use of animal models has been invaluable in helping to understand critical factors and mechanisms in many human diseases. Although animal models do not reproduce all of the features of alcoholic pancreatitis in people, they are very useful for understanding specific mechanisms of injury, inflammatory response, and adaptation. There are basically two rat models that have been used widely in alcohol studies of liver disease and adapted to the study of pancreatic diseases: the Lieber-DeCarli
