Abstract

In the second half of the 20th century Alvin Toffler launched the theory of the 3 waves in order to explain the evolution of the mankind and the human society. These 3 waves are the agricultural period, the industrial period and the age of the information. The agricultural period which started around ten thousand years ago, relied on man's physical force oriented to the domination of the land with the use of different kinds of tools. The main characteristics of the industrial wave, which started around the 17th century, are the uniformity of almost all human activities and the everyday life of the standard nuclear family. The main purpose of the science and the technology is to use natural resources and develop procedures in service of the flourishing industry. The last wave described by Toffler, called as a post-industrial period or the age of the information, is characterized by 2 opposite movements, the globalization and the exaltation of the individual. During these different periods, the Western medicine and the sinomedicine, have experimented big changes from the period of natural cure for individual illness, through the period of the massive industrial medicine to the age of the rescuing the individual of his deceive solitude (monajiapathy). The waves mentioned by Toffler and the evolution of the mankind can be well explained with the 5 elements theory (wu xing). If we assign the earth as the element of the agricultural wave, according to the generative cycle of the 5 elements theory, the metal is the element of the industrial period and the water is the element of the information age. In the same way of thought, the next, the 4th period of the human evolution is the age of the wood characterized by the rise and growth of the individual and the variety.
