The evaluation of the therapeutic contribution of acupuncture treatment in rheumatoid arthritis Bi syndromes.
MethodsIn this work 10 patients with rheumatoid arthritis were treated with acupuncture for at least two years, with sessions once a week first period, then every fifteen days, and then once a month.
TreatmentRheumatoid arthritis is a chronic progressive disease, with acute flares, inflammation and infection events. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, treatment differs according to the predominant Bi. Hot Bi (Heart), appears in arthritis flares. In chronic disease there can be Wind Bi (Liver), Damp Bi (Spleen), Cold Bi (Kidney), and Dry Bi (Lung). The treatment consists of diagnosing the affected Bi, treating the trigger points with needles, moxas and electroacupuncture, working on the meridians the deficient Zang Fu and auriculotherapy.
ResultsOf 10 patients, 8 had improved progression with acupuncture treatment. Patients achieved greater joint flexibility, better walking, greater well-being, with self- sufficiency. They decreased analgesic overdose, and reduced intake of corticoid drugs; none of the patients were able to decrease immunosupressants. In the patient evaluations all were in agreement that their quality of life was better after acupuncture, and their emotional state improved. In 2 patients the treatment was ineffective.
ConclusionsIn the majority cases of rheumatoid arthritis the acupuncture treatment improved the patients’ quality of life, disease progression, decreased acute flares and stabilised the patients’ lives.
