The prevalence of obesity has increased alarmingly over the last 50 years and is estimated to affect more than 50% of the population by the middle of this century. It is well known that excess weight leads to metabolic changes in the body that have a direct impact on the most prevalent diseases with the highest morbidity and mortality rates in the world today, such as cardiovascular diseases, metabolic diseases with a particular impact on type 2 diabetes mellitus and cancer. Until a few years ago, the treatment of obesity was based exclusively on behavioural, exercise and dietary guidelines with very uneven results and a great difficulty of adherence by the population. Recently, new pharmacological therapies have emerged that may bring about a drastic change in the management of obesity and its consequences, so an update is needed.

Special issue information:
Obesity, being a metabolic disease with global repercussions on the body and in particular on the cardiovascular, endocrine and immune (cancer) systems, requires a multifactorial approach. The aim of this special issue is to carry out a global review of its pathophysiology, clinical consequences and therapeutic options that will allow health professionals involved in its management a practical, scientific and up-to-date approach.
With this intention, we have designed a summary in this special issue that combines review articles, original research articles including systematic reviews that shed light on clinical practice as well as shorter articles on specific aspects of the diseases, all combined with images and case studies.
It is an aim of the editors that the content of the articles should cover the broad field of obesity and its complications, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, hepatic steatosis and its diagnosis, the mental sphere, new pharmacological options and a proper update on dietary choices and properly implemented physical exercise.
To this end, various authors who are experts in the field have been asked to contribute to achieving the proposed objectives, with the articles being subject to the usual quality controls in our journal of peer review and final decision by the editors.
The content of this special issue is aimed not only at Family Doctors, but also at other specialists and health professionals involved in the management of obesity.
