Last update: June 2024

A growing number of studies have indicated that engagement in regular physical activity is linked to reduced risk of incident mental health problems, including psychiatric and neurological disorders, and that exercise the structured physical activity, can reduce mental health symptoms.
While there is robust evidence for some mental disorders, as depression and anxiety, there is considerably less studies investigating this effect for other conditions. Further, the extant evidence is mostly from developed counties and cross-cultural data on this topic are still needed. Lastly, there is still scarce evidence on the potential neurophysiological mechanism underlying associations of physical activity (or physical fitness) with psychological and cognitive measures in human subjects. In this special issue, we aim to collect original studies or high-quality review exploring the psycho-cognitive welling of exercise and its associated biological mechanisms.
