Abstract
Introduction

Breast reconstructive surgery is an important stage in the therapeutic pathway of women with breast cancer, contributing to physical and psychosocial rehabilitation. However, it is a procedure associated with risks that require a structured multidisciplinary approach. In this context, nursing plays a central role, particularly in preoperative preparation, clinical surveillance and the early detection of complications during the perioperative period. Thus, this scoping review aims to map the available evidence on nursing interventions in the perioperative period that contribute to the prevention of complications in breast reconstructive surgery.

Methodology

A scoping review was conducted according to the methodology proposed by the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI). The search was carried out in October 2024 in the MEDLINE database via PubMed, Scopus, EBSCOhost, Wiley Online Library and LILACS. Studies published between 2019 and 2024, written in Portuguese, Spanish or English, were included.

Results

Twenty studies were included in this review. The main interventions identified included preoperative education, mitigation of risk factors, promotion of intraoperative safety, flap monitoring, early mobilisation, infection prevention and discharge preparation. The implementation of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols was shown to be associated with reduced length of hospital stay and opioid use, without an overall increase in complications.

Conclusion

The prevention of complications in breast reconstructive surgery benefits from continuous, systematised and coordinated nursing care throughout the perioperative period. Although most of the included studies did not focus specifically on nursing interventions, the available evidence makes it possible to recognise the central role of nursing in reducing the risk of complications and promoting safer and more effective recovery.
