The results of the diagnostic tests used to study gastrointestinal motility disorders in patients with diabetes correlate poorly both with symptoms and with their response to therapy. Thus, to diagnose (and treat) frequent gastrointestinal disorders symptomatic patients should be assessed. However, asymptomatic patients need not be assessed, because the presence of gastrointestinal (unlike cardiac) dysautonomy has no prognostic value. In addition, treatment of gastroparesis has not been provev to improve glycemic control.
