Call for papers: Metástasis hepática del cáncer colorrectal: estrategias de tratamiento actuales / Colorectal cancer liver metastasis: Current management strategies

Liver metastasis for colorectal cancer are a current major health problem because of its high prevalence and complex management.

Surgery, oncology and basic science have contributed as main cornerstones during the first decades of the 21st century to increase survival and quality of life for patients who present with this disease. It is impossible to understand these developments ignoring a full multidisciplinary approach which has improved largely the outcomes for patients with liver metastasis.

In this issue a thorough analysis of the state of the art is performed focused on the role surgery and the rest of the treatment strategies.

Special issue information:

This issue focuses on the current management strategies for liver metastasis from colorectal cancer, following a multidisciplinary approach for different clinical situations.

The most outstanding topics in relationship with surgical treatment are reviewed from the initial patient assessment and patient optimization, including an analysis of the benefits of enhanced rercovery after surgery, to the different treatment modalities and its results.Biology and genetics, as key topics for understanding this disease, and further areas of development for new treatments are also discussed with a special attention to neoadjuvant and adjuvant regimes.
Surgical planning including imaging, volume and function assessment and future liver remanent modulation to prevent postoperative liver failure will also be described.

This issue offers a thorough analysis of different potential scenarios which will need individualized strategies as synchronous presentation (colon first vs simultaneous approach vs liver first), metachronous disease, missing/disappeared metastasis and also extrahepatic disease presentation as lung metastasis or peritoneal disease.
Challenging non conventional surgery for complex cases (ex situ, in situ, ante situ) and liver transplantation for unresectable disease will also be reviewed.
Finally, quality standards will also be discussed with a deep analysis of morbidity, mortality and oncological outcomes observed with these different strategies.

We believe that this issue, focused on liver surgery for colorectal cancer metastasis will offer a complete update of the current state of the art for this major clinical problem.
