Aims

The aim of this study is to show that the surgical technique known as metatarsal ostectomy is effective and that complications are few and not serious. Patients and methods. A simple surgical technique was performed using the block of the sciatic nerve or local anaesthetics as anaesthesia, which allowed us to perform the intervention in an ambulatory fashion without the need for pre-operativepreparation beforehand.

Results

Of 238 patients treated for plantar ulcers, 150presented relapses (63%). These were submitted to surgical treatment involving ostectomy. The ulcers were seen to heal quickly (1.4 weeks) with the use of this technique, andto date there have beenfew relapses (9.33%), as well asfew, unimportant complications, such as haematomas and slight sepsis of the wound.

Conclusions

The surgical technique calledmetatarsal ostectomy is an effective technique in the treatment ofneuropathic plantar ulcers. Very few complications were observed.
