Colombia is currently facing a shortage of essential medicines, including crystalline insulin, a cornerstone of treatment for critically ill patients. In response to this crisis, strategies based on the use of rapid-acting analogs administered intravenously have emerged; however, these recommendations are largely based on expert opinion and lack robust evidence. This literature review aims to evaluate whether the use of rapid-acting analogs represents a safe and effective alternative to addressing the shortage of regular insulin in critically ill patients.
