Abstract

In the last two decades, the continuous emergence of pathogenic coronaviruses, including SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV, and SARS-CoV-2, has highlighted a major and ongoing threat to global public health. As the rate of zoonotic spillover events increases, the emergence of new coronaviruses becomes highly likely. Currently available vaccines are mostly strain-specific, and waning immunity is one of the major challenges as the virus evolves rapidly, leaving populations susceptible to antigenically distinct or newly emerging variants. The development of broad-spectrum vaccines represents one of the most effective strategies to protect humanity against future coronavirus threats. Hence, this paper highlights the urgent need for developing broadly protective coronavirus vaccines to mitigate future pandemics and improving global preparedness against emerging infectious diseases.

En las últimas dos décadas, la aparición continua de coronavirus patógenos, incluidos el SARS-CoV, el MERS-CoV y el SARS-CoV-2, ha puesto de relieve una amenaza importante y constante para la salud pública mundial. A medida que aumenta la tasa de eventos de transmisión zoonótica, la aparición de nuevos coronavirus se vuelve muy probable. Las vacunas disponibles en la actualidad son en su mayoría específicas para cada cepa, y la disminución de la inmunidad es uno de los principales retos, ya que el virus evoluciona rápidamente, lo que deja a la población vulnerable a variantes antigénicamente distintas o emergentes. El desarrollo de vacunas de amplio espectro representa una de las estrategias más eficaces para proteger a la humanidad contra futuras amenazas de coronavirus. Por lo tanto, este artículo destaca la urgente necesidad de desarrollar vacunas contra el coronavirus que ofrezcan una protección amplia para mitigar futuras pandemias y mejorar la preparación mundial contra las enfermedades infecciosas emergentes.
