Abstract

Since 2003, bisphosphonates are a concern in dentistry. At that time, the first known cases of osteonecrosis of the jaw were associated with intravenous bisphosphonates’ therapies (pamidronate and zolendronate). Most of the reported cases were associated with a dental surgical procedure, usually a tooth extraction. Patients treated with bisphosphonates may attend a dental appointment at the time of the following stages: prevention, diagnosis or when treatment is needed. This review article describes the guidelines to be followed in the dental management of patients treated with bisphosphonates, focusing on the prevention and treatment strategies according to the clinical stage of the patient.
