Abstract

Traumatic occlusion was defined as an aggression of the tooth and periodontal tissues by an excessive force. In the beginning of the 20th century, started a long controversy about the association between excessive occlusal forces and the beginning and progression of periodontal disease, with advances and retreats on the inclusion of oclusal pathology treatment in a periodontal treatment plan.

The main purpose of this work is to review publications for clinically viable information about the relation between occlusion and periodontology, and about possible influences between typically studied situations in both areas.

Occlusal treatment seems to be pointed as a part of periodontal therapy, and although it doesn’t solve periodontal disease, it can induce its progression and prognosis.
