Abstract
Introduction

The COVID-19 pandemic significantly affected individuals with chronic pain, leading to increased pain severity, reduced functionality, compromised mental health, and a decline in overall quality of life.

Objective

To explore the perceived impact of the pandemic on women with fibromyalgia, including their physical and mental health, physical activity and exercise, employment status, and access to and quality of healthcare services.

Methodology

Eleven women with fibromyalgia were recruited using snowball sampling. Semi-structured, in-depth interviews were conducted, and an inductive thematic analysis was implemented following Braun and Clarke.

Results

Five main themes emerged: (1) Impact of the pandemic and lockdown on physical symptoms, (2) Impact of lockdown on mental health, (3) Physical activity and exercise during lockdown, (4) Influence of work-related changes, and (5) Experiences with healthcare services. Participants reported increased pain and stiffness due to immobility. Negative emotions, exacerbated by social isolation and uncertainty, were predominant. Telephone contact with loved ones was identified as a protective factor. Participants expressed a sense of abandonment, highlighting difficulties in accessing healthcare services, while the empathy of healthcare professionals was crucial in alleviating this feeling.

Conclusion

The findings underscore the importance of addressing mental health in this population during periods of social isolation, promoting physical activity and exercise, maintaining active employment, and ensuring healthcare services are tailored to their needs.
