Examinar los efectos de una intervención educativa para mejorar el nivel de activación de los pacientes y promover su participación reforzando su seguridad durante la asistencia.

Selección y estudio del proceso asistencial sobre el que aplicar la investigación. Diseño y edición del material educativo audiovisual. Muestreo intencional de pacientes en lista de espera para operación programada por el Servicio de Traumatología. Captación telefónica mediante guion explicativo del estudio. Realización de dos grupos focales, con distribución heterogénea por género, edad y nivel de estudios. Visualización del vídeo educativo y exploración de aspectos de interés mediante guion de preguntas semiestructurado, con base en los objetivos de la investigación. Grabación y transcripción de los discursos generados. Análisis cualitativo de la información.

Los pacientes eran conscientes de que se producen fallos y errores, y reconocen las debilidades del sistema y de los profesionales. La actividad educativa aportó más valor a las personas con menor experiencia previa o con menos conocimientos respecto a la dinámica de funcionamiento del sistema sanitario. La interacción entre personas con diferentes experiencias ha producido un intercambio de conocimientos entre ellas, potenciando el efecto educativo de la intervención. El nivel de conocimientos y el grado de activación han aumentado en todos los pacientes, independientemente de su situación de partida.

Potenciar el papel del paciente como barrera de seguridad a través de una intervención educativa de carácter audiovisual es factible en condiciones reales y útil para el objetivo que se persigue.

Examine the effects of an educational intervention to improve patients’ level of activation and promote their participation improving their safety during health system pathway.

Selection and study of the care process on which to apply the research. Design and edition the audiovisual educational material. Intentional sampling of patients on the waiting list for scheduled operation by the Traumatology Service. Telephone collection through study's explanatory script. Realization of two focus groups, with heterogeneous distribution by gender, age and level of studies. Visualization of the educational video and exploration of aspects of interest through semi-structured questions script, based on the research objectives. Recording and transcription of generated speeches. Qualitative analysis of resulting information.

Patients are aware that failures and errors occur, and recognize the weaknesses of the system and professionals. The educational activity brings more value to people with less previous experience or less knowledge about the dynamics of the health system. The interaction between people with different experiences entails an exchange of knowledge, enhancing the educational effect of the intervention. The level of knowledge and the degree of activation increases in all participants, regardless of their starting situation.

Strengthening the role of the patient as a safety barrier through an educational intervention of an audiovisual nature is feasible in real conditions and useful for the objective pursued.
