Occupational stress, or burnout syndrome, is a frequent disorder among nursing staff that has a high personal, occupational and social cost. We performed a cross-sectional survey of the relationship between degree of burnout and personal, occupational and organizational variables in a sample of 150 male and female nurses (85 nursing graduates and 65 nursing auxiliaries) belonging to five clinical units in four hospital centers in the province of Badajoz. Our results reveal that factors such as a low level of occupational satisfaction, a dysfunctional attitude of excessive need for approval, and male and female nurses' perception of inadequate social recognition are associated with greater levels of occupational stress
