Born in Villagarcía de la Torre (Badajoz, Spain) in 1927, he developed a strong medical vocation from a young age, inspired by his father—a rural doctor and later a family physician in Seville. He graduated and received his doctorate in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Seville with Extraordinary Honors, beginning a brilliant professional career that would lead him to become one of the most influential academic surgeons in Spain.
After completing his training at Hospital Valdecilla in Santander and obtaining his degree as specialist in General Surgery, he pursued further studies at prestigious international medical centers, such as the Lahey Clinic and Mayo Clinic in the United States, as well as Middlesex Hospital in London. These experiences solidified his modern, open view of surgery, which would define his entire career.
In 1967, he was named Chair of Surgical Pathology and Clinical Surgery at the University of Barcelona, an institution to which he remained closely linked until his retirement and subsequent appointment as Professor Emeritus. He was an extraordinary educator. He trained several generations of surgeons, promoted an educational approach based on scientific rigor, intellectual curiosity and professional excellence, leaving behind a legacy of reference texts, including Cirugía. Fundamentos, indicaciones y opciones técnicas, which was used for years at numerous medical schools.
Professor Dr Pera Blanco-Morales’ contribution to the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona was equally decisive. As Dean of the College of Medicine, and working together with prominent collaborators, he promoted significant organizational reforms that modernized the clinical and academic structure of the institution, fostering the development of biomedical research and helping to transform the Hospital Clínic into an internationally renowned medical center.
A tireless researcher, he made significant contributions to areas such as wound healing, hepatobiliary surgery, portal hypertension, gastroesophageal reflux disease, and gastroesophageal carcinogenesis. He published numerous scientific papers and actively participated in national and international organizations dedicated to medical training and the development of surgery.
His prestige was acknowledged with numerous distinctions, including Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland, the Commander's Cross and Plaque of the Civil Order of Health of the Kingdom of Spain, and the Pere Virgili Prize from the Catalan Society of Surgery.
Likewise, he also chaired the National Commission for General and Digestive Surgery, the Catalonian Society of Surgery, and the European Union's Advisory Committee for the Training of Physicians.
But perhaps the Professor's most singular contribution was his commitment towards bridging the gap between science and the humanities. After his retirement, he pursued a prolific intellectual career as essayist and humanist. Works such as El cuerpo herido, Pensar desde el cuerpo or El cuerpo silencioso reveal a physician who was not content with merely curing diseases, but instead one who aspired to comprehend the human experience of illness, pain, fragility and hope.
For him, surgery was much more than a technique. It was an encounter between people. He firmly defended the importance of listening, explaining and supporting. He believed that the surgeon's hands and the doctor's words together were one single expression of help and compassion—a vocation of service.
In 2022, he was inducted as an Honorary Academician of the Royal Academy of Medicine and Surgery in Seville. On that occasion, he masterfully summarized the spirit of his entire life as a surgeon by stating that, more than any scientific or technological breakthrough, the patient should always remain the central focus of surgery.
We bid farewell to a great surgeon, an exemplary professor, and an intellectual committed to the pursuit of truth and the unity of knowledge. But we also say farewell to a man who viewed medicine as an act of moral responsibility toward human suffering.
His legacy lives on in his students, his colleagues, his books, and all those who learned from him that professional excellence only achieves its full meaning when accompanied by humanity.
