Summary

Treatment of ankylosing spondylitis (AS) has two important aspects: one is pharmacology, for the control of inflammatory activity and pain and the other is physical treatment, basically by exercise, to maintain or improve articular flexibility and posture.

In this article, only the most important aspects related with physical exercise and AS are approached, including the description of physiopathology of the disease, the different diagnostic criteria used and the different assessment scales. A review is made of the different alternatives of physical treatment, performed over the years and the results published by the different authors are analyzed. Finally, a review is made of the different associations of patients with AS registered in the Spanish Rheumatology Association (LIRE) that has a very important role in the adherence of the patients to the exercise programs in the long term.
