The ongoing advances in Reproductive Medicine have promoted the clinical application of Human Uterus Transplant as a means to resolving the cases of uterine sterility for which the only alternative was adoption or uterus subrogation.
Considering that the uterus is not a vital organ and that its transplantation would exclusively contribute to a better quality of life for the patient, there are even more ethical dilemmas in the weighing up of whether the desire to gestate a child should prevail over the risks involved in a uterus transplant for all the parties: donor, recipient and foetus.
Even though 11 uterus transplants have now been performed worldwide, and extraction and transplant surgeries do not involve particularly difficult techniques, it has not yet achieved an ongoing pregnancy with the birth of a healthy child, which would be the final evidence of success for this technique.
