Resumen
Non steroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may produce severe gastro-intestinal (G-I) complications and their treatment generates an important resources expenditure. The aim of this study was to know the hospital cost secondary to the treatment of severe G-I complications appeared in patients treated with NSAIDs. We performed this analysis by reviewing the clinical charts of all patients hospitalized in 2 tertiary Spanish hospitals for this cause during 1998. After the detection of these patients all the resources used during their hospitalization (concomitant medications, complementary exams and tests, blood products consumption, intrahospital consultations and length of stay in the hospital) were collected until their complete recovering. 36.8 % of hospitalized patients for this cause had taken any NSAIDs the same day of the event (86.4%) or during the previous days. The cost derived of treating these patients was of 85 millions of pesetas in both hospitals during 1998 with a cost/patient of 389,831 pesetas. Due to the high consumption of NSAIDs in daily medical practice in our country, the cost of treating severe G-I complications in the hospital will yield an important charge for the National Health Service.
