Micronutrients, vitamins and minerals are compounds required to maintain an adequate physiological state. Micronutrient deficiency causes a complex syndrome of symptoms and signs, which are well defined for each vitamin and mineral, and which evolve in three stages: depletion of stores, impaired biochemical function and clinical deficiency disease, which may become evident in any organ or system. Currently, in the western world deficiency diseases are found only among risk groups, but they are still a health problem in developing countries. The diagnosis of deficiency diseases begins with the identification of nutritional risk situations. Careful history-taking and physical examination are the cornerstones of diagnosis.
