This is a review of the clinical aspects of the metabolic syndrome (SM): definition, prevalence, diagnosis and treatment. We analyze its relationship with cardiovascular disease, both from a general point of view and from andrology. We pointed on aspects of the SM that may be interesting for the Sexual Medicine experts, especially cardiovascular events. We analyze the recommendations of the Princeton guidelines and those for patients with moderate cardiovascular risk. The study concludes by recommending an expert on the sexual medicine clinic show greater sensitivity to the SM. Having always mindful that patients who suffer have a high cardiovascular risk. And that the proper treatment of these patients should include a comprehensive approach, that is not limited only to potential andrologycal symptoms (such erectile dysfunction), but also the clinical entities that comprise it: hypertension, dyslipemia, hyperglycemia and obesity.
The expert on sexual medicine should be familiar with the management of treatments and diets that allow this integrated approach to the patient with SM.
